Shorter University sophomore Nicolas Toscan has been named the Southern States Athletic Conference Men`s Cross Country Runner of the Week as announced by the league. Toscan, a native of Monaco, ran a personal record 8k time of 20:12.72 to lead the Hawks to a 7th-place finish at the 12-team Covered Bridge Open in Boone, N.C., over the weekend.

The event featured mostly NCAA Division I teams, including Wake Forest, Davidson, North Carolina, Florida State and Appalachian State, among others.

Toscan`s time was good enough for 13th-place in a field that included 119 athletes. All told, Shorter boasted three runners in the top 35, with Peter Limo and Eliud Ng`etich placing 33rd and 35th, respectively.

This is the first Runner of the Week honor for Toscan, who last season, helped the Hawks to an 18th-place finish at the NAIA Men`s Cross Country National Championship.

Toscan and the Hawks return to action this Saturday, Sept. 11 when they compete in the Berry Invitational hosted by Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. The event is slated to begin at 9 a.m.
