The Georgia State Council Society for Human Resource Management
named John Reiners, Professor of Business at Georgia Highlands
College, as the 2010 Human Resource Leader of the Year for his
leadership and vision in the field of human resources. The
award was presented before a gathering of more than 200 HR

Leadership Conference held in Macon, GA.
In its second year, Georgia SHRM’s top HR award recognizes individuals who demonstrate the value that human resources contributes to the success and effectiveness of an organization and makes contributions that advances the profession. Reiners was selected from a regional pool of nominees representing the best in HR throughout the state.
“It is both an honor and a privilege to congratulate Dr. John Reiners on receiving Georgia State Council SHRM’s highest awards for HR leaders,” said Greater Rome SHRM President Mardi Haynes-Jackson. Reiners has been associated with the human resources profession for over 30 years and has taught at the college level the past 14 years. After serving as Human Resources Director at Georgia Highlands College (then Floyd College) from 1999 through 2001, he returned to teaching, inspiring students to pursue degrees and careers in the human resources profession. Reiners is a Past-President of the Greater Rome Chapter of the SHRM and has served on the chapter’s board of directors since its inception. He is SPHR certified and is a founding father of the chapter, where he has continually held the position of Chairperson of the Programs/Seminar Committee. “John was a great HR Manager; I was very disappointed when he made the decision to go back to the classroom” wrote Dr. Randy Pierce, President of Georgia Highlands College in a letter of support for the award “his contribution to this institution is immeasurable and he is a valuable teacher.”
Greater Rome SHRM was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Chapter of the Year award, recognizing its Mock Interview Project with Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Medical Assisting Program. This endeavor entailed members of the chapter volunteering their time, expertise, and HR knowledge by interviewing graduating medical assisting students for workforce readiness core skills. The chapter conducted several projects during the year including an industry certification review of Coosa High School’s Business and Computer Science Department, a legislative trip to the state capitol followed by a meeting of legislative guest speakers, and its current project is Cell Phones for Soldiers drive. The chapter also nominated Southeastern Mills for the recognition of Company of the Year citing its innovative high performance work place initiative. Southeastern Mills was a unanimous nominee by Greater Rome’s nomination committee, stating Southeastern Mills HR department “is a role model for employee empowerment and forward thinking.”
