The U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Tuesday
that Georgia, along with 18 other states, are finalist for a
second round of grand funding from the new education reform
program. Almost $3.4 billion in federal economic stimulus fund
will be available to states whose comprehensive school reform
plans are chosen for funding through President Obama’s Race to
the Top initiative.
Tennessee and Deleware were awarded a combined $600 million earlier
this year in the first round. Georgia just finished out of the
money in third place.
If Georgia wins the competition they could receive up to $400 million
over four years.
Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue has been a strong supporter of the
Obama administration program, which emphasizes merit pay for
teachers.
