The Floyd County Board of Health wants to add regulations to local tattoo and piercing shops.
The first effort to pass such a bill was presented Thursday. If approved later this year, the new rules would begin on December 31. The regulations that were presented includes protocols like sterilization techniques, age requirements and having separate areas for cleaning tools.
The current laws says that the shops only have to get a business license, but individuals are not licensed and regulations on health and safety have not been established.
A citation would be given to the shops and/or artists for not complying.
The artist would be required to go through a one-time test so that they understand the regulations and procedures.
The shops will also have to maintain a yearly license, along with continuing education in various first aid and blood borne pathogens.
Licensing will begin in July, but permits will be required by Dec. 31.
