Georgia River Network is teaming up with the Coosawattee
Watershed Alliance and the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce to
announce Paddle Georgia 2009, a week-long, 92-mile canoe/kayak
camping adventure on the Coosawattee and Oostanaula rivers June
20 - June 26. This year, proceeds from the event benefit Georgia River Network,
Coosawattee Watershed Alliance in Ellijay and New Echota Rivers
Alliance in Calhoun.
Paddle Georgia organizers are looking to sign up approximately
300 participants to paddle a 92-mile stretch of the Coosawattee
and Oostanaula rivers from Ellijay to Rome. The Paddle Georgia
event will include educational programs on the river’s cultural
and natural history, tours of facilities located along the river,
and nightly games and entertainment. Now in its fifth year,
Paddle Georgia participants have thus far traveled more than 400
miles on four different Georgia rivers and helped generate more
than $45,000 for river protection in Georgia. More than 1200
people have participated in the first four years of the event.
Also at the news conference, Coosawattee Watershed Alliance
members will unveil their `Mud Meter` The Mud Meter will indicate
the daily turbidity (amount of dirt in the water) of the Cartecay
River. By indicating the condition of the river, the Mud Meter
will create awareness of the river system and direct citizens to
the Coosawattee Watershed Alliance website.
Georgia River Network is a statewide nonprofit environmental
organization working to ensure a clean water legacy by engaging
and empowering Georgians to protect and restore our rivers from
the mountains to the coast.
