Public health officials have confirmed that a 70 year-old resident of Floyd County has the West Nile virus.

Testing was confimed at the Georgia Public Health Lab in Atlanta.

While the West Nile virus can be deadly, the victim is said to be recovering.

This marks the second human case of West Nile virus in Georgia this year.

West Nile virus is spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. People age 50 and older and those with compromised immune systems may experience an increased risk of severe complications, even death, from the virus. The season peaks in September and ends with the first freeze of the year.
